The Chongyang Festival is a traditional Chinese folk festival that falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar. The number "nine" is a Yang number in the I Ching, and the two Yang numbers of "ninety-nine" overlap, hence the name "Chongyang"; as both the sun and the moon fall on the ninth day, it is also known as "Chongyi The nine days and the moon both fall on the ninth day, so it is also called the "Chongyi". The ancients considered the ninth day of the ninth month to be an auspicious one. In ancient times, it was customary to pray for good fortune, worship the gods and pay homage to the ancestors, as well as to drink and pray for longevity. The festival has been passed down to the present day, with the addition of connotations such as respect for the elderly. The two main themes of today's Chrysanthemum Festival are to climb high to enjoy autumn and to give thanks and respect to the elderly.
The Chrysanthemum Festival originated from the celestial worship, which began in ancient times, became popular in the Western Han Dynasty and flourished after the Tang Dynasty. According to extant historical sources and testimonies, in ancient times there was a harvest festival held in the autumn to worship the heavens and ancestors; in September, when the crops were harvested, the ancients offered sacrifices to the heavens and ancestors to thank them for their kindness. The Tang Dynasty was an important period when traditional festival customs were kneaded and finalised, and the main part of it has been passed on to this day.
The Chongyang Festival has evolved over the course of history, combining a variety of folk customs into one and carrying a rich cultural connotation. On 20 May 2006, the festival was inscribed by the State Council on the first list of national intangible cultural heritage.  In 2012, the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly, which was amended and adopted by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, stipulates that the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar each year is the Day of the Elderly.
